📰 Police oversight

Issue 3

Weather: Today is sunny with a high of 61. ☀️

Welcome back! In AER you'll find links to stories and things to do to be a better and more informed Summit County citizen.

We also want to share ways to help your neighbors and get help if you need it. So if you're an organization offering food or services, or you're seeking donations or volunteers, please let me know. My email address and cell are at the bottom of every email.

Each of these emails should take about three minutes to check each day. We publish at 6 a.m. weekdays.

OK, here we go!

1. A fight in the boys bathroom at Firestone Community Learning Center ended in a stabbing

The victim was 16 and seems to be doing OK after being stabbed Friday. Another boy, 14, might be charged. They were both freshmen. No details on what led up to this.

2. Akron Comicon turns 10

Over 150 vendors and 2,000 people showed up this year. The event is coming back next year. Here's where you can get updates.

3. Should Akron cops be supervised by citizens?

Lots of people think so, but Mayor Dan Horrigan opposes the charter amendment Akron voters will decide tomorrow. The problem, he says, is that the police have contracts that allow them to investigate issues themselves without external oversight. (Perhaps the contracts are the problem then?)

4. Akron needs help designing a logo for its 200th birthday

"This logo will be used for a range of marketing material leading up to and during the city’s 200th anniversary and will forever live as a symbol of the city’s Bicentennial Celebration."

5. Two University of Akron professors are suing for discrimination

They allege the university picked them for layoffs because of their race. One is Nigerian. The other is Indian.
